Teaching case: Student centered learning fosters deeper learning and engagement in chemistry.

We will begin by meeting Jenny Dauer, the new Centre Director of the USE programme, who will briefly introduce herself and give a short overview of the USE programme and its mission.
Following this introduction, Christina Wegeberg will present her active learning approach, which she has implemented both in an existing course she inherited from a colleague and in a new course that she designed from the ground up. The teaching is based on the flipped classroom model and active learning exercises, where videos form an integral part of the students’ preparation, allowing them to engage actively with the course material during class. Christina’s role is therefore primarily to facilitate the students’ learning process rather than to lecture.Christina will present concrete examples of how this student-centred approach has influenced students’ motivation, understanding, and exam readiness. The presentation includes course evaluations and student feedback highlighting increased learning outcomes, curiosity, and the experience of a supportive and safe learning environment - both in theoretical teaching and in laboratory settings. One of Christina’s personal experiences is that this teaching approach requires less energy during class, as the students are the ones actively engaged, while she primarily guides the learning process, asks questions, and encourages the students to work through challenges themselves. Finally, Christina will reflect on how this teaching approach can significantly reduce preparation time in the long term once the overall structure and learning materials have been established.

The event will be held in English.
A sandwich will be served at the end of the event. Registration is required!
