Projektbeskrivelse
We apply chemical principles and techniques to understand the underlying molecular origin of fundamental biomolecular processes that play essential roles in human health and disease. Our research is primarily aimed at unravelling the chemical basis of epigenetics, by providing a comprehensive, atomic level understanding of biomolecular recognition and biocatalysis involved in vital epigenetic gene regulation processes. To address this aim, we develop new chemical tools for basic molecular studies on widespread posttranslational modifications on histones and other proteins. To better understand the chemistry of life, we design and develop chemically and structurally diverse analogues of enzyme substrates and cosubstrates, enabling us to systematically explore the structure-function relationship in the biomolecular world. Building on basic understanding of protein modifications, the group develops a new generation of inhibitors of biomedically important epigenetic enzymes. All our research projects involve interesting chemistry targeted at understanding biology.
Students will gain experience in synthetic organic chemistry, solid-phase peptide synthesis, enzyme assays, inhibitor profiling, NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Students will receive excellent daily supervision from PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Students will learn how to work independently, while also collaborating with other researchers at SDU.
