Students open a window to science

How do you make a scientific article engaging, concise and accessible without compromising academic quality? Four students are exploring exactly that question in the library’s recording studio, where they transform research articles into short videos for a wider audience.

The library’s recording studio is home to Window to Science, a science communication project supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Through the project, the library is exploring new ways of bringing research literature closer to students and the wider public. Working from the library’s in-house studio, students produce short videos that present scientific research in an engaging and accessible format while maintaining the integrity of the original research.

“The library’s role is not only to provide access to research – we also want to help ensure that research is understood and put to use. Window to Science is an experiment in new forms of science communication, where students play an active role as bridges between research articles and readers, and between research and society,” says Library Director Bertil F. Dorch who also contributes videos to the project himself and has extensive experience communicating science through video, including on his own YouTube channel, Astrophysics News

Use the recording studio in your teaching

The facilities are not reserved for the project team alone. The library’s recording studio can be booked by both teachers and students for the production of videos, podcasts and other digital content.

The studio is part of TheLab, the library’s creative learning and research space, and is equipped with LED lighting, tripods, reflectors, backdrops and other recording equipment to support a wide range of projects.

The recording studio can be booked by both students and teachers. Please note: The library provides access to the studio and equipment but cannot assist with production, technical setup or recording. Book the studio.

The studio is part of TheLab, a creative learning and research space equipped with a range of resources and technologies that support experimentation, collaboration and creative academic work.

Video articles from Window to Science are available as a playlist on the library’s YouTube channel.

Watch the video articles

Throughout 2026, the student assistants behind Window to Science will produce many more of the project’s article videos, featuring some of the latest Danish research, primarily within the natural sciences and technology. All research articles presented in the videos are published as Open Access.

The student team consists of three hosts: Josefine Enemark Melchior, a recent graduate in Biology; Alberte Freja Siobhán Troelsen Harritsø, a Master's student in Chemistry; and Noah Daniel Dirksen, a Computer Science student with a particular interest in mathematics. They are joined by Stine Korff, a Journalism student who assists with recording, science communication and editing. Together, they combine scientific insight and communication skills to transform research articles into engaging stories.

Kuben

The team has also received valuable support in getting started with video production from, among others, Karsten Prinds from Kuben, who visited the library’s recording studio to help the students navigate the many practical aspects of video production, including lighting, microphone techniques, camera settings and much more.

“It is both exciting and challenging to work with my own field in a format where complex research has to be communicated clearly and concisely. At the same time, the project gives me insight into other disciplines, such as physics, and the opportunity to collaborate with students from programmes I would otherwise never encounter. That collaboration is both inspiring and highly rewarding,” — says Josefine Enemark Melchior, a Biology graduate and host of the Window to Science article videos.
