See you at the Annual University Celebration

The faculty has many things worth celebration ahead of the party of the year

By Marianne Holmer, , 10/26/2023

Dear staff

The semester has started and the students are filling the corridors everywhere on Campus. I only hear good things about our new students, who are committed and eager to learn new things.

This week the Annual University Celebration gets underway and it's always very festive with the many students who take part. This year we have both a newly minted doctor and an honorary doctor with us for the celebrations.

It is gradually becoming a rarity that doctors are hatched in natural sciences, but Professor René Holm from FKF has worked hard on his doctoral thesis in pharmacy and defended it on his 50th birthday at the beginning of October.

It is actually the first time that we have a doctoral thesis in pharmacy, which calls for big congratulations to René.

Our Honorary Doctor Maxim Kontsevich is a renowned mathematician who received a Fields Medal at a very young age. Maxim has collaborated with the Center for Quantum Mathematics for a long time, and I hope this will continue in the future. Also big congratulations to Maxim.

We continue to focus on natural science with the holding of the national Space Conference at the beginning of November. This year, SDU is hosting the annual space conference organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

Great interest is expected for the conference this year, when Andreas Mogensen is in Space. There will even be direct transmission to Andreas and ISS during the conference.

The conference has a broad target group and has a special focus on the young people who can participate in the Youth Space Conference. This is an exemplary collaboration across faculties, which stems from the collaboration SDU Galaxy.

Finally, the SDU Quantum Hub was launched at an opening symposium at the end of September. Researchers from all the country's universities were invited. The audience got a broad introduction to quantum research, as it looks in Denmark right now.

Quantum research is new to many, including the undersigned, and there were many of us who greatly appreciated the lecturers' educational introduction to the various topics within quantum research.

It is clear that all universities have high ambitions to contribute to the development of quantum research. The large investments at the University of Copenhagen are seen as a stamp of quality for Danish research.

The SDU Quantum Hub brings together half a hundred researchers who want to share knowledge and collaborate across SDU. It is really great to see one of SDU's strengths – the easy access to researchers from different disciplines – unfolding in new interdisciplinary constellations.

I am very much looking forward to the continued development of quantum research at our faculty and SDU.

Now I want to iron my shirt, polish my dancing shoes and get ready for the annual party. I wish all a great evening on this festive occasion.
