Dynamic research development keeps SDU in the global top 200 in the NTU Ranking 2026
For the third consecutive year, the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is among the world’s top 200 universities in the NTU World University Ranking. This comes as the University continues to develop new research environments across its faculties, which are now beginning to have a positive impact on external assessments.
SDU is ranked 195th in the latest NTU Ranking 2026, placing the University in the top 10% of the more than 2,000 universities worldwide included in the ranking.
The NTU Ranking differs from many other international university rankings in that it focuses exclusively on research and research quality, based on analyses of scientific publications, citations and research impact.
The result underlines SDU’s ability to conduct research at a high international level. The strong recognition comes at a time when SDU continues to develop new research environments in areas including climate, energy, quantum software, health, technology, law and social sciences. These new environments build on existing areas of strength while laying the foundations for the research of the future.
Research investments are delivering results
Maintaining a position among the world’s top 200 universities for three consecutive years requires more than individual achievements. It requires strong research environments, highly skilled researchers and a sustained ability to develop new fields of research and research collaborations.
In recent years, SDU has invested significantly in new research environments and research infrastructure. Among other initiatives, the University has strengthened research into climate and the green transition through new elite centres under the SDU Climate Cluster. It has also established new research environments in areas including advanced energy technologies, quantum technology, defence technology and health research.
In 2024–2025, the MedTech Odense partnership was established between SDU, Odense University Hospital (OUH), the Region of Southern Denmark and the City of Odense, with the ambition of creating a research-based hub for health technology. In 2026, SDU opened two very different research centres: the Center for Large Structure Production at Lindø and the Center for Law, AI and Robotics.
The development of new research environments is intended not only to generate new knowledge, but also to strengthen the University’s ability to attract talented researchers, international collaborations and external research funding.
Further evidence of SDU’s strong research performance
The ranking result does not stand alone. Earlier this year, an independent analysis by Elsevier showed that SDU has the highest research impact in Denmark. Measured by the widely used Field-Weighted Citation Impact indicator, SDU achieved a score of 2.01 – more than twice the global average.

The NTU World University Ranking 2026 ranks the world’s top 2,000 universities. Published by National Taiwan University, it is a purely bibliometric ranking based on research publications, citations and scientific impact.
