Skills development in English as a working language at SDU

SDU is an international university with students and researchers from all over the world. This means that as employees, we communicate in English more and more in connection with our work. As a part of SDU's new Policy on the use of foreign languages at The University of Southern Denmark  , all employees at SDU will be offered skills development in English, both spoken and written.

English courses

The courses are offered as short sessions. Each course is targeted for a certain communicative need and typically run over a period of 6 or 8 weeks of 2 hours a time once per week. The courses give the opportunity of working with materials/cases from the participant´s daily work. Courses will be offered in all campus cities. The courses will be conducted during working hours.

The idea is to develop the range of courses to cover different communicative needs at SDU such as:

  • Spoken communication
    • service, servicing by telephone
    • student advising
  • Written communication
    • internal communication (e-mails, meeting material)
    • texts for homepages and other outgoing information
  • Chairing of meetings, minutes and agendas

There is no participant charge for English courses.

Everyone is encouraged to present suggestions for targeted courses that suit the needs of you or your colleagues. New courses will be able to be set up on an ongoing basis. Suggestions and wishes should be sent to HR-udvikling@sdu.dk

The CEFR Scale

The start and finish level for each course will be described according to the CEFR scale. All participants will be required to take a test to evaluate their current level. After which, the participants will be placed in relevant groups. Read more about the CEFR scale.
