Who can authorise and pay?
The head of section assesses whether an employee needs an SDU-paid home connection.Payment for the connection is covered by the individual department/unit (EAN number must be stated).
For the Central Administration, SDU IT covers the cost of home connections.
What does SDU offer?
SDU’s contract supplier for home connections is currently TDC Erhverv (SKI agreement). SDU IT can assist with establishment, cancellation and help with contacting TDC if any problems or questions arise.
TDC can provide a cable solution. For an indication of what TDC can deliver at a given home address, please see https://tjekditnet.dk/
If you need to order or make changes to a home connection paid for by SDU, you must contact the Service Desk at https://service.sdu.dk. Here you must state your home address if you need to set up a connection. If you need to make any changes, please also state your installation number.
TDC cable internet
This option gives you the highest speed TDC can deliver at your address (coax or fibre), but SDU pays for a maximum speed of 100 Mbit.
A wired connection is generally the most stable, but it requires a physical setup with the proper connections installed in the house. The router offered by TDC will typically be the device that establishes the wireless network used in the household but will also allow you to connect computers directly to the router using cables.
What about TV, more speed and fixed telephony?
SDU pays for the internet connection provided by TDC, which is regulated by the SKI agreement. SDU pays for internet only.
In some areas it will be possible to purchase additional speed, YouSee TV solutions and other services at your own expense in addition to the connection paid by SDU. When contacting SDU, access can be given to a TDC ‘webshop’ in which products can be purchased, but further contact is a matter between the user and TDC/YouSee.
What if TDC’s solutions aren’t available at my home address?
As mentioned, TDC is SDU’s contract supplier via SKI, and SDU has no agreements with other internet service providers (ISPs).
If TDC cannot provide sufficient capacity (at least 30 Mbit) at the user’s home address, it may be necessary to investigate the possibility of having other ISPs at your home address. If it is deemed necessary to set up a connection where SDU is responsible for payment, the provider must at least offer electronic invoicing.
SDU IT helps with the establishment and administration of the TDC connection, but unfortunately cannot offer help with other providers. When choosing other providers, it is the responsibility of the individual department/unit to ensure that the chosen solution is reasonable and financially tries to align as closely as possible with SDU’s solution.
What about mobile broadband internet?
The advantage of mobile broadband internet is that the wireless router is very versatile and only needs to be plugged into a wall socket. Wireless internet speeds can be very good, although the speed may fluctuate over, for instance, the course of a day. This is because mobile broadband can be affected by how many people in the neighbourhood are connected to a local mast. The more people connected, the lower the capacity in general as the capacity is ‘shared’.
Internet via mobile broadband can be used in areas where wired options are outdated or where other technical conditions make mobile broadband the best solution.
Contact the Service Desk at https://service.sdu.dk to learn more about your options.
How much does it cost?
Prices and products are fixed in accordance with SKI agreements.
The SKI agreement that currently applies to SDU has TDC as the contract supplier and the price of a wired connection is set at DKK 149 per month. This is regardless of whether the connection is based on DSL (copper line), coax (antenna) or fibre.
General comments
The market and technological possibilities for internet connectivity are constantly evolving, with major fibre network expansions, local antenna associations upgrading their networks and mobile networks constantly being upgraded.
Consequently, changes are constantly being made or new opportunities arise. If you are unsure about what is possible, please contact the Service Desk.
At the same time, expectations and needs for home connectivity have increased. SDU pays for solutions that deliver speeds of 100 Mbit. A 100 Mbit connection will typically cover both the need to be able to do SDU work from home and cover your household’s internet needs. At a speed of 30 Mbit, the connection will typically not be able to cover your household’s internet needs while doing SDU work and participating in online meetings, for example.
This is a guideline only. A household’s actual internet speed needs may vary significantly depending on the activities being performed. That’s why several solutions also offer the option to purchase additional speed at your own expense.
