Approved browsers at SDU

To protect both you, your data, and the entire SDU's IT security, we block the use of browsers that do not meet our security requirements. This is not to restrict you, but to ensure that you can work safely and efficiently without unnecessary risks.

To ensure that all users work on a stable, secure, and updated platform, SDU IT only allows the use of these browsers, which we maintain, keep updated, and respond to quickly if a security threat arises.

Browsers outside this list may contain known vulnerabilities, lack modern security features, or create errors in SDU's systems. For this reason, they are blocked on SDU-managed computers to protect both you, your data, and the entire organisation.

SDU IT strives to inform users of non-approved browsers when they are blocked but cannot guarantee information in all cases.

Why is it necessary to limit which browsers may be used?

Restricting the use of browsers is not about control, but about eliminating real security risks that would otherwise affect both users and the entire organisation. IT security at a large institution like SDU depends on everyone using browsers that meet modern standards for security, stability, and compatibility, and that these browsers are properly maintained and updated.

Here are the main reasons:

Approved browsers (Edge, Chrome, Safari, Firefox) receive frequent security updates – often several times a month. These updates close known security gaps that hackers actively try to exploit.

Browsers outside SDU’s approved list are not updated by SDU IT, and therefore may contain critical vulnerabilities for extended periods.

When a new vulnerability is discovered (e.g., a zero-day), SDU IT can:

  • Force updates through
  • Block specific versions
  • Respond directly to the risk.

This can only be done for the browsers officially supported by SDU. If everyone used a random selection of browsers, SDU IT would not be able to protect SDU effectively.

Modern approved browsers have advanced built-in security features:

  • Blocking malicious websites
  • Warnings about insecure certificates
  • Protection against dangerous downloads
  • Site isolation (sandboxing of tabs)

Alternative browsers or niche browsers often lack these features or receive them much later. SDU IT will not be able to ensure that browsers outside of the approved ones are correctly configured and updated. Therefore, they pose a significantly greater risk in an organisational context.

Some alternative browsers:

  • Use outdated rendering engines
  • Have weaker encryption
  • Allow uncontrolled plugins
  • Contain advertising, tracking, or third-party modules

By blocking them, SDU IT protects users against malicious software or data collection, which users often do not notice.

The university handles large amounts of:

  • Sensitive personal information
  • Research data
  • Collaboration agreements with external parties
  • Access to critical infrastructure

Browser vulnerabilities are one of the most common attack vectors. Therefore, SDU must have control over which browsers are used – just as there are requirements for antivirus, firewall, and access management.

Support becomes both faster and more efficient when SDU IT knows exactly:

  • which browsers are available on SDU's computers
  • how they are configured
  • how they are updated
  • which security features they have.

If each user installed their own browser, SDU IT would not be able to troubleshoot or secure the platform in a responsible manner.

Many internal and external web systems require modern web technologies, which are only available in updated mainstream browsers.

If users employ non-approved browsers, it can result in:

  • Login errors
  • Data loss
  • Missing features
  • Poor performance

This means more wasted time for users at SDU and more errors that SDU IT cannot support or resolve.
