Guidelines for secure SDU computers

To protect SDU's data and information, it is a requirement that all managed SDU computers purchased and paid for by SDU are security compliant.

What does security compliance on a computer mean?

Security compliance means that computers and devices adhere to a number of set security standards and protocols. This can include up-to-date antivirus software, encrypted hard drive and most importantly: The operating system (Windows or MacOS) is up-to-date with the latest updates.

At the end of the day, it's all about keeping your computer healthy. The aim is to minimise the risk of data breaches, malware, phishing attacks and other security threats.

How does SDU IT ensure compliance and what can you do?

As an employee, you play an important role in ensuring that your computer is up-to-date and meets the current security requirements.

Updating the operating system

An updated operating system is the foundation of a compliant computer. SDU IT therefore pushes out updates to SDU computers as soon as they are released. Most often, this is done automatically. In some situations, it may require an action on your part. It is important that you follow the update requests you receive directly on your computer or by email.

You can postpone updates briefly, but if you repeatedly postpone, there is a risk that your computer will become non-compliant and therefore unable to access SDU data and Microsoft 365.

Regular software updates

Make sure software is regularly updated to close known security holes and get the latest functionality.

Automatic updates can help ensure that no updates are missed.

SDU IT updates all software you install from Firmaportal on Windows and Software Centre on Mac. As a starting point, only install the software you need from here.

100 % compliance is not realistic

Even though SDU IT makes every effort, there is a risk that the computer may end up in a non-compliant state. The solutions we use have a 95% compliance target, and we constantly strive to be within - and of course higher if possible.

Why is security compliance necessary?

Cybercriminals often exploit vulnerabilities in systems to gain access to identities (username and password) and data. By maintaining high security standards and ensuring that all devices are compliant, we can effectively prevent many of these threats and protect SDU from attacks.

The university is required to comply with GDPR and other international information security standards and state minimum technical requirements. Non-compliance may result in fines and legal sanctions.

By ensuring that our systems are compliant, we reduce the risk of breaches and the consequences that follow.

In addition, more and more international research projects with external funding are placing increasing demands on information security.

SDU handles a significant amount of data, including confidential data and sensitive personal data about students and employees, research data and administrative information.

Unauthorised access to this data can have serious consequences, such as identity theft, financial losses and damage to the university's reputation.
