Generative AI in education at SDU (project)

Generative AI has become ubiquitous. This facilitated the launch of ChatGPT 3.0 in November 2022, and since then its expansion has been explosive both in the development of generative AI and in the number of generative AI products and services that are available. Among other things, generative AI has created new pedagogical and didactic opportunities and served as a tool for lecturers to organise teaching as well as the more administrative processes associated with it. At the same time, generative AI also presents new challenges, such as in relation to exams, copyright and data protection. 

Both the opportunities and the challenges are handled differently across SDU and are largely left to the discretion of the individual lecturer. This substantiates the need for a clear approach to how SDU explores and approaches generative AI in education. 

The aim of the project

 The project aims to create a common basis for working constructively with generative AI in the area of education at SDU. To fulfil this purpose, the project will, among other things, identify the areas where generative AI does and will make a difference in teaching and education at SDU, as well as create specific products that support the use of generative AI in teaching and education at SDU. It is an important focus that the individual lecturer should not stand alone in relation to handling and building knowledge about generative AI at SDU.

A joint effort on generative AI is about much more than just the technology. It is very much about people, organisation and making informed choices. Many people at SDU are already focusing on generative AI, including in research, education and administration. In order to mature SDU’s approach to working with generative AI in the education area, there will be a need to gather and draw on the experiences we already have, link these to projects and collaborations that have already been initiated and set the framework for further exploration. 

The result of the interdisciplinary discussions at a AI symposium on 22 August 2023 has contributed to the UR deciding at a meeting on 6 September to set up working groups, which over the autumn of 2023 will, among other things, provide input to and help to qualify

  • the work carried out by study boards and other study administrative bodies on guidelines for how GenAI can and must be used in teaching at SDU, including how this should be communicated to the students. Teaching must be understood broadly in this context, applying in relation to both entrance exams, teaching, guidance and exams.
  • GDPR, copyright and IT security guidelines for everyone in the education field when it comes to GenAI
  • competence development of teachers in the use of GenAI

Working groups In extension of the upcoming symposium, one or more working groups are expected to be set up to contribute to delivering specific products within the perspectives that have been chosen for further work.

No financial and resource framework has been defined for the project in advance. After the symposium, more detailed estimates for the specific products will be prepared. 

The participating units will self-finance the hours spent on the project. If there is a need for financing of specific products, financing must be agreed with the project owner. 

It is necessary to address generative AI in education. It is considered to be a good business case to have a collective approach to generative AI in education at an overall level to ensure common standards and legal usage, but at the same time allow for local customisation to best support the education programmes according to their relative needs.
