The Staff’s Column
Do you have a union representative in your unit?
The voices of the employees are important – and need to be heard. This applies to both individual colleagues and management.
Union representatives play a key role in ensuring that the employees’ interests are protected. They are not only formal representatives but also important links between employees and management. They contribute to a workplace characterised by dialogue, trust and shared responsibility.
At SDU, we actively work with values such as participation and involvement – these are fundamental elements in our common development. However, successful development requires that employees have a clear voice. This is where union representatives make a difference.
Does your unit lack a union representative?
If so, maybe now is the time to take the first step.
There are already many skilled and committed union representatives at SDU, but some areas still lack a formal representative in local discussions and collaboration forums. This applies to matters of daily well-being, working conditions, reorganisations and other decisions that affect the employees’ everyday lives.
It may seem like a big decision to run for office – or to encourage a colleague to do so. But no one is on their own. SDU has a strong network of union representatives, who are happy to share experiences, provide sparring and help newly elected union representatives get started.
Among other things, we can help you by offering an initial discussion of:
- Time spent
- How to organise elections
- Roles, rights and tasks
- Organisation of the club
- Ongoing sparring and support
You can also contact me if you or your unit would like to discuss what having a ‘TR’ (union representative) entails and how to get started.
Why is it important?
Because involvement starts with representation. And because a safe and respectful working environment that promotes well-being and good collegial relations requires committed employees who take responsibility and make themselves available to the community, supported by their respective unions (social partners).
