All about Copilot

Have you just gained access to Microsoft Copilot Premium? On this page, you will find everything you need to know to get off to a good start with the new tool.

Copilot Premium comes to SDU

We are pleased to make Copilot Premium (M365 Copilot) available to you; it is a secure and useful AI tool that you can use with confidence in your work, without worrying about where your information ends up—whether you are handling public information or confidential documents.

We have done our best to gather everything you need to know to get off to a good start using Copilot responsibly in your work at SDU. We realize it might seem overwhelming at first, but you can proceed entirely at your own pace. Fortunately, you do not bear the responsibility alone; we are ready to help if you have any questions.

When a new IT tool is introduced, questions regarding data, access, and responsibility quickly arise. We have therefore compiled some of the concerns about Copilot Premium that we have already heard around the workplace, and we address them below.

Overheard on campus:

  • No, your Copilot is personal—just like Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and the rest of the Microsoft 365 suite. As a new feature, the premium license offers more collaboration options within Copilot; for instance, you can now choose to share agents, invite others to your notebooks, and collaborate on chat responses. However, your Copilot remains a private space.

  • The short answer is: No and no. The slightly longer answer: Copilot follows the same access permissions as the rest of Microsoft 365, and it can only find and use content you already have access to. However, it remains important to clean up sharing settings, folders, and Teams and SharePoint sites—not because Copilot changes access itself, but because it makes existing access visible.

  • No, Copilot does not monitor what you are doing. With the premium license, Copilot is built into all M365 applications, but it does nothing until you actively ask it to.

  • No, IT does not track how you use your personal Copilot. Only in exceptional cases might there be specific situations requiring the retrieval of relevant information—such as in response to freedom of information requests, security incidents, or other formal matters—but this does not involve monitoring the work of individual employees.

  • No. Copilot cannot suddenly start sending emails, moving files, or booking meetings on your behalf while your back is turned. It can help you write, summarize, and suggest next steps, but you remain in control. Copilot does not initiate anything on its own.

  • No. When you use Copilot at SDU, neither your interactions nor your files are used to train Microsoft’s AI models. Your data is processed within the same secure environment as the rest of Microsoft 365 – even when Copilot uses web searches to provide an answer. You simply need to ensure that you are logged in with your SDU account when using Copilot.

  • No, you can't. On the other hand, you decide for yourself how much and in what way you use it. Think of it as an extra tool in your toolbox: it’s there when it makes sense for you, and you can start using it at your own pace.

  • Yes. Right now, Copilot is the absolute safest AI tool available to us at SDU, as it is covered by our existing data protection agreement with Microsoft. This means you can confidently use it in your work—including with internal and confidential information. We are pleased to make Microsoft Copilot Premium available to you. 

The solution unlocks features that can ease daily tasks by assisting with both routine tasks and brainstorming ideas, solutions, and answers - all while ensuring data security, data protection, and governance are considered.

SDU has chosen Microsoft Copilot as the AI tool for working with SDU's enterprise data because it is integrated into the Microsoft 365 platform we already use, thereby operating within our existing security, rights, and compliance setup, ensuring our data remains protected and is not used to train external models.
