Generative AI

SDU's journey with Generative AI: Where do we stand now?

By Nina Thorsted Petersen, , 11/22/2024

SDU is experiencing, like other universities in Denmark and abroad, how generative AI is changing the conditions and opportunities for research, education, collaboration, and administration. The technology is rapidly evolving and has great potential to positively support SDU's development and positioning over time. The prerequisites for creating value with generative AI are a strong focus on security, technological understanding, and competence development. Read more here about the initiatives underway at SDU and how you can start using generative AI in everyday life.

SDU is exploring how generative AI can be used in research, teaching, and administration. Experiments are continuously being conducted with Microsoft's Copilot and Microsoft Azure AI Studio, as well as alternative AI tools and platforms. There is also a strong focus on competence development for teachers and administrative staff to embrace and master the technology in daily work.

Different experiences with the technology

Some employees and departments have quickly adopted the technology and made it an integral part of their digital toolbox. Others have not yet found a value-creating way to use the technology. Several colleagues have been surprised and somewhat disappointed that using generative AI is not as easy as it appears in tech companies' advertisements.

What should I do if I want to start using AI chatbots in my work?

This question is often asked, and there are very simple steps to get started.

  1. Take a moment to understand what generative AI actually is, as it differs significantly from what you are used to. Using AI chatbots is not the same as using, for example, Google Search. You can find a brief description here: Generative AI at SDU.
Important! Then read the safety guidelines that SDU has issued for the use of AI chatbots. SDU provides an enterprise license for Microsoft Copilot chat for employees and students but does not prohibit the use of other AI chatbots. Just remember the safety guidelines when using them!

  2. Choose a chatbot and start with simple prompts (questions/instructions) and base it on something that is known knowledge to you. In this way, you can evaluate the quality of the answers the AI chatbot provides.

  3. Practice makes perfect. It requires some effort to learn how to make good prompts and to take the time to get to know the tools. After some time, it will become easier to make advanced prompts. Find inspiration for prompts and other tips and tricks from colleagues on this whiteboard.

  4. Keep up with the AI course offerings available through SDU Employee Courses and choose what suits you. The above section is placed in a news box.

Copilot chat is now an integrated part of your Microsoft 365 account in browser and can store your chat history. Please note that Copilot chat functionalities change regularly.
