Job Structure for Academic Staff at SDU

Recruitment of academic staff at SDU follows the Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities (in Danish)
The job structure distinguishes between principal positions and other positions:

Principal positions
The principal positions form a coherent university career path. The positions involve research, including a commitment to publication and scholarly dissemination, as well as research-based teaching. The PhD is not considered a principal position; rather, it is a prerequisite to start a university career path.

The university career path consists of the following positions:

  • (PhD) – assistant professor – associate professor – professor
  • (PhD) – researcher – senior researcher – professor

Particularly talented associate professors may be offered a promotion programme. See SDU’s promotion programme.

Other positions
The other job categories are not part of the coherent university career path but are used in defined areas. The other job categories include the following:

  • Other, general positions
    • Research assistant
    • Postdoc
    • Teaching assistant professor
    • Teaching associate professor
    • Assistant lecturer
    • Part-time lecturer
  • Other positions (health sciences)
    • Clinical assistant
    • Clinical lecturer
    • Clinical professor

The table below provides an overview of the prerequisites, content and period of employment for the various positions.
