Apply for computer glasses

  • ouAt SDU, you make an application for computer glasses from your immediate superior, head of department or head of section, who must ensure that the following two conditions are met before authorisation is granted for provision of the glasses:
    • The screen workspace must be appropriately set up. The visual display unit workplace should be set up in accordance with the Danish Working Environment Authority’s requirements as set out in the Danish Working Environment Authority’s 2008 guidelines for workplace layout and fixtures. The local health and safety group will check whether this has been carried out. The health and safety group can request external expertise to review the layout of office workplaces. To assist with the health and safety group’s workplace lay
t assessment, please refer to Check Your Office Workplace (PDF) (only in Danish).

  • By means of an appropriate examination of the employee’s eyes and vision by an optician (or ophthalmologist if tinted glass is required), it must be confirmed that the employee concerned can benefit from the eyewear, which means that the employee’s need for computer glasses deviates from the normal need for the use of glasses. This is done by having the head of unit or department sign a requisition to Synoptik, with which SDU has entered into a procurement agreement as of 1 June. 2016. If Synoptik finds that there is no need for computer glasses, Synoptik is obliged to return the requisition. The requisition is valid until one month after the date of issue.
REMEMBER! When ordering the computer glasses, the employee must bring a requisition for computer glasses with the appropriate measurements for Synoptik to complete the order.

How to apply for computer glasses

  1. Use the online requsition for Synoptik.
Make sure to get help to fill in the requsition from your health and safety group as the form is in Danish.

The agreement with Synoptik entails that all lenses must be treated with anti-reflective coating as standard and that the frames are from Synoptik Acetal and Metal.

Further information about computer glasses

According to the Danish Working Environment Authority’s Executive order on work at visual display units (only in Danish), employees who work at a visual display unit for a not inconsiderable number of normal working hours have the right to be provided with computer glasses at no cost to the employee. As a rule of thumb, this condition is considered to be met when the employee works at a screen for about two hours or more virtually every working day.

Computer glasses are glasses that ensure that the employee can work safely at a screen. Eye strain can also be caused by an inappropriately set up screen workspace and/or poor lighting. If as a natural part of the work, the individual needs to be able to focus both on screen work and the surrounding environment, the computer glasses can have multi-strength lenses. In particular, the glasses can be helpful for employees who, over time, develop age-related far-sightedness.

Computer glasses are needed when you can no longer see sharply at different distances and have to use reading glasses. Ordinary reading glasses are made for a reading distance of 35 to 45 cm, while the distance to the screen is longer (50-70 cm) and therefore requires a different strength.

At its meeting on 7 December 2011, the General Occupational Health and Safety Committee decided that it should not be possible to make additional purchases of computer glasses that are provided by SDU. This is to ensure clarity about the agreement as well as ownership and purpose of the eyewear, and that it is consistent with practice applicable to other work equipment, such as computers.

After the glasses are purchased, the supplier forwards an invoice to the granting unit/department, which manages the payment and registration of the glasses. In principle, the eyewear is the property of SDU and must be used in connection with the workplace.

SDU has entered into an agreement for the purchase of computer glasses for employees. The agreement contains a number of standard products for which a particularly good price is given. If an employee needs to have special requirements for the computer glasses met, this will also be possible to buy via Synoptik. It is always the device that pays for the computer glasses, regardless of whether they are delivered as a standard product or specially made computer glasses.
