Guidelines for hiring assistant lecturers

The qualification requirement is a completed master's degree.

In the case of academic positions,  the law on temporary employment applies, which stipulates that an assistant lecturer can have a maximum of three consecutive appointments (one new appointment + two extensions).

An assistant lecturer can be employed with or without a job advertisement.
An assistant lecturer who is employed without a job advertisement can be employed for max. one year and can have one extension for up to one year .
A teaching assistant who is employed via a job advertisement can be employed for max. three years and can have two extensions for up to three years at a time.

Requests for employment without a job advertisement must go through SDUjob. For each candidate, the following is to be uploaded:

  • CV
  • Proof of acquired master's degree
  • Academic assessmet(form in Danish or form in English) - must be carried out by someone at associate professor level or higher. The academic assessment must be signed, and it must be made clear who prepared it.
  • Statement of hours (HUM and SAMF are excluded, as hours can be entered by the unit in SDUemploy)

When assistant lecturer contracts are extended, an email is sent to HR-DVIP with the candidate's full name and/or civil registration number and the exact period of extension.

The statement of hours must be attached to the extension request (HUM and SAMF are excluded, as the hours can be entered by the unit in SDUemploy). If there are changed terms in relation to the employment contract that is being extended, e.g. based on financial details, please specify this in the email with the request for extension

If re-employment is requested less than six months after the end of the most recent employment period  as an assistant lecturer at SDU, it is considered an extension of the most recent employment period.

Hours are paid according to how the period of the statement of hours is described.

That is, if it is stated, for example, 'autumn/spring semester 202x', the hours will be paid at 1/5 over the entire semester (autumn semester: September-January, and spring semester: February-June), or the part of the semester in which the assistant lecturer is employed.

If the hours take place in portions of the semester, it must be specified in the timetable for which months the hours are to be paid, e.g. 'September-November'.

Form for statement of hours

Assistant lecturers may carry out max. 780 working hours per academic year (1 September-31 August). The hours limit also applies in the case of several simultaneous appointments as an assistant lecturer at the University of Southern Denmark.

If the assistant lecturer has several simultaneous appointments, it is important that the departments co-ordinate the hours consumption so that the hours limit is not exceeded.

The conditions of employment cease without special notice at the end of the period stated in the letter of employment.

Notice of resignation by the assistant lecturer is to be given one month before the first of a month.

The assistant lecturer must send a written resignation to the employing unit and SDU HR.
