University of Southern Denmark is receiving an increasing number of malicious e-mails, attempting to gatheruser passwords or personal information (phishing). In order to avoid those phishing scams, we have gathered the following tips.
An example of a phishing e-mail is a mail containing the logo of SDU, a text requiring you to confirm your SDU account details, and a link to help you do this. The link brings you to a seemingly authentic website where you type your account details. The problem however is that it was a malign website used to gather your information illegally. The fact that it is not a SDU domain will only be visible from the URL code.
Be careful opening links from a sender who you do not expect to receive an e-mail from. When in doubt contact the sender and ask about the legitimacy of their e-mail.
Be especially careful with jokes, chain letters and breaking news etc.
If you want to click a link in an e-mail message, first find out where the link will lead you:
-
Place the cursor on the link without clicking
-
Normally, a text box with the actual URL will appear
-
Does the address correspond to the address stated in the e-mail text, and do you trust the address?
