Furthermore, 84 % answer, that they also mostly read the unsolicited applications they get. And 63 % of them answer, that they have tried to hire someone who applied unsolicited*. This pattern is repeated in IDA's figures, as a a total of 60% of IDA's newly graduated members get their first job by different ways than the traditional posted job - and unsolicited job search is one of the strategies. During this online workshop you will get specific tools and methods on how you proactively approach the companies by both calling and writing. In short: You’ll learn to take control of your own job search which will increase your motivation. The workshop is hosted by SDU's career counsellors, and the experts sharing their best tips at this online workshop are career advisers from IDA. The format will be a mixture of theory and tools. A student job in Denmark during your studies can kickstart your career and provide you with much better opportunities to enter the Danish job market successfully once you've completed your education. It teaches you things that books alone cannot and helps you build your network. The impact of part-time jobs is also evident in the statistics: One year after graduation, 20% more people are employed if they've had a part-time job compared to those who haven't. Speaker: Manuel Meyer Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy University of Southern Denmark Abstract: The nature of dark matter continues to elude us, even after almost one century after first evidence for this non-luminous substance appeared. A leading hypothesis is that dark matter, which makes up more than 80% of all matter in the universe, consists of yet undiscovered fundamental particles. Such dark matter particles might interact feebly with known particles of the Standard Model, making them potentially detectable in the laboratory. The predicted low interaction rates require extremely sensitive detectors and ultra-low background levels. In this talk, I will discuss our recent progress in characterizing and improving the performance of transition edge sensors (TESs). Such TESs are planned to be used in the Any Light Particle (ALPS) II experiment, which searches for axions and axion-like particles. I will also review how we can use our TES to search for weakly interacting massive particles. With our ongoing research, we hope to achieve a new record for background suppression employing both optical filtering inside a cryostat as well as machine learning techniques while maintaining a quantum efficiency close to unity.  Location: D-IAS Aud. On April 12, 1945, a stunned world learned that Franklin D. Roosevelt, the leader who had brought the United States through the two great crises of the twentieth century, was dead. Responding to this shocking development, the Danish physicist, Niels Bohr, expressed the view that it seemed impossible to believe that “the great man, upon whom more than anyone else, the hopes of humanity were centered” was gone. What Bohr and the rest of the public did not realize, of course, was that by the spring of 1945 Franklin Roosevelt was a dying man. What’s more, his sudden disappearance from the world stage at this critical moment meant that leader who had orchestrated the alliance that would go on to defeat the forces of fascism and set the stage for the successful creation of the United Nations would not be there to witness these historic developments. Nor would he be present when his government faced one of the most daunting decisions made in human history—the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Roosevelt’s absence at the dawn of the nuclear age has raised several questions about what might have happened had he lived long enough to witness the successful development of the atomic bomb. Would Roosevelt—whose knowledge of and involvement in the making of the atomic bomb was far more extensive than President Truman’s—have followed the same course of action? Or might FDR have pursued an alternative strategy for ending the war, through negotiation or a demonstration of the atomic bomb’s awesome power. Equally significant, might he have ultimately taken Bohr’s advice and shared the atomic secret with the Russians in such a way as to gain their confidence and perhaps avoid the onset of the nuclear arms race that stood at the heart of the Cold War? As discussed in this presentation, a close examination of FDR’s last 100 days in office offers some interesting clues as to what Roosevelt might have done had he lived long enough to bring the most destructive war in history to an end. About David B. Woolner: David B. Woolner is Professor of History and Kovler Foundation Fellow of Roosevelt Studies at Marist College; Senior Fellow and Resident Historian of the Roosevelt Institute; and Senior Fellow of the Center for Civic Engagement at Bard College. He is the author of The Last 100 Days: FDR at War and at Peace (Basic Books, 2017), is editor/co-editor of five books, and served as historical advisor to the Ken Burns films The Roosevelts: An Intimate History and The US and the Holocaust and for numerous special exhibitions at the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. Dr. Woolner is the recipient of the Fulbright Denmark Distinguished Scholar Award in American Studies at the University of Southern Denmark (2023-2024) and was recently named a Fulbright Specialist for the years 2021-2025 by the US Department of State’s Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs. From 2000-2010, Dr. Woolner served as the Roosevelt Institute’s Executive Director, overseeing a significant expansion of the organization’s budget, programmatic dimension and staff. He earned his Ph. D. and M.A. in history from McGill University and a B.A. summa cum laude in English Literature and History from the University of Minnesota. Speaker: Thibault Langlais (University of Oxford) Abstract: The Lie group G2 is one of the two exceptional cases in Berger's list of possible Riemannian holonomy groups. I will start by introducing the basics of G2-geometry, emphasizing its relation to Calabi-Yau geometry in (real) dimension 4 and 6. The moduli spaces of G2-manifolds are smooth and carry a natural Riemannian metric, analogous to the Weil-Petersson metric, whose properties are poorly understood. I will show that certain singular G2-manifolds correspond to finite-distance limits in the moduli spaces, which proves that G2-moduli spaces are generally not complete. Time permitting, I will also say a few words about the computation of curvatures.

Nancy L. Segal, professor of Phycology and Director of the Twin Studies Center, at California State University, Fullerton Twins and Other Extraordinary Kinships: The Science and the Fascination Twins have a universal fascination for both scientific professionals and members of the general public. Why this is the case has been a matter of some debate, but several explanations will be suggested. Next, an overview of twin types (identical and fraternal) and the fascinating variations displayed by each type are described and illustrated (e.g., twins reared apart, biracial twins, twins with different fathers) with compelling data and case studies. Some curious, twin-like twosomes are also included, given that they are scientifically informative, as well as fascinating (virtual twins, unrelated look-alikes, switched at birth pairs). Twin research continues to grow and to flourish as more twins are being born and researchers representing diverse disciplines, such as politics, religious studies, and economics, are embracing a twin-based approach to better understand their observations. About : Dr. Nancy L. Segal is a Psychology Professor and Director of the Twin Studies Center, at California State University, Fullerton. She specializes in twin research and teaches courses in developmental psychology. She had authored nine books on twins, most recently Deliberately Divided: Inside the Controversial Study of Twins and Triplets Adopted Apart (Segal, 2021); and Gay Fathers, Twin Sons: The Citizenship Case That Captured the World (Segal, 2023).. Speaker: Sergey I. Bozhevolnyi Center for Nano Optics University of Southern Denmark Abstract:Manipulation of single-photon emission from quantum emitters (QEs) has attracted a considerable attention in recent years due to its importance for quantum information technologies in quantum communication, computation, sensing and metrology. Here, recent progress in on-chip manipulation of the polarization, directionality and phase distribution in single-photon emission by making use of planar holographic QE-coupled metasurfaces is presented and discussed. The underlying idea is related to the concept of meta-atom, in which a QE is efficiently and non-radiatively coupled to surface modes, such as surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), that are subsequently outcoupled into free propagating waves. An innovative metasurface design approach, vectorial scattering (computer-generated) holography, is introduced for the purpose of designing hybrid SPP-QE coupled metasurfaces suitable for generation of well-collimated beams of single photons with desirable polarization characteristics propagating along given directions. Latest results include its extension for realizing single-photon sources with radiation channels that exhibit diverse (including vectorial with spin and orbital angular momenta) wavefronts and polarization characteristics, opening thereby a way to generating quantum structured light in high dimensions. While the menopause is commonly understood as a ‘hormone deficiency’, numerous studies have shown that the menopause is not solely a biological phenomenon, but is influenced by environmental, social, and cultural factors. Given the variation in menopause experience and its complexity, how to best support women through this transition is a considerable societal challenge. It is our belief that this question can only be tackled through an interdisciplinary approach. The workshop ‘Women in Transition’ seeks to build the groundwork for such interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing insights from the fields of medicine, sociology, communication and literature. The questions driving the workshop is about the role of biological, sociological and cultural factors in the menopausal experience, and how this insight can be used to facilitate the work of medical researchers and practitioners. The workshop will be structured ‘from the macro to the micro’: from large quantitative population studies, through quantitative/qualitative data gathered in organisations, to individual experiences expressed in literary works.
